Five Years of a Hobo Lifestyle

Several dates come to mind when I think of when I began my "Hobo Lifestyle"; when the idea first started spinning in my head, when I was done with my job, done with paying rent, leaving New York, getting out on my own and when I first started hitchhiking. This is the timeline of how things happened:

November 29, 2006
Hatched the idea while sitting at work, a reception job near Grand Central Station.

January 17, 2007
Cut off from that last "on the books" job in Manhattan.

Posted first episode of Hobo Lifestyle on YouTube, just an introduction.

July 1, 2007
Last rent check I ever paid got me through June 2007, since then I've been rent free.

July 9, 2007
Left everything but the essentials behind and road tripped out to Wyoming with family.

August 14, 2007
After a month with family in Wyoming, I was dropped off in Whitefish, Montana where I sat alone for the first time with the backpack that I still have now, unlimited possibility ahead.

October 9, 2007
First hitchhiking experience, couple rides through LA area to get to Santa Monica.

To me it's August 14th stands out as the day when I was officially off to it, just me and my backpack, but today, July 9, 2012, is exactly 5 years since I hit the road. In any event, it's been a blast.

People have often asked when I plan to stop. I suppose they'll keep asking for a while.
